Boxing Equipment

Perhaps more than for any other sport, choosing the right boxing equipment is essential, since boxing has strict guidelines and rules for the type of equipment being used and being worn. In addition, the training requires boxing equipment to be entirely suited to the boxer, since otherwise the boxer may be inadequately trained or prepared.

When you also consider the fact that boxing equipment is essential in affording protection and security not just for the boxer, but also for his sparring partner, it becomes extremely clear that buying cheap or inappropriate boxing equipment is a bad idea.

There are three main types of item which might be categorised under the heading of boxing equipment - and these are clothes, protection, and practice equipment. As far as the clothing worn for boxing is concerned, these include the shoes, shorts and boxing gloves, and during practice matches a vest shirt may also be worn.

Boxing gloves certainly gain the most attention, and whilst it is true that choosing the right boxing gloves is important, make sure that you balance your budget carefully. A mistake made by some amateur boxers is to spend the majority of their budget on the gloves, with the boxing shoes being considered of much less importance.

Both should be treated with equal care, as not having the right boxing shoes can prove to be just as much of a handicap as having inappropriate gloves. Boxing gloves come in a range of weights, and it will be important to make sure that you choose the correct weight for your own physical size. If your boxing gloves are too heavy then you will be tiring your arm muscles much too quickly, leaving you lagging in later rounds.

For heavier boxers a heavier glove can help to provide a greater degree of thrust. But although boxing equipment tends to often centre around the variations and options available for boxing gloves, boxing shoes can't be overlooked.

Boxing shoes are not the same as other sports shoes, and they have three distinct differences, each of which is essential in allowing the boxer to move freely, quickly and to be able to continue for a good length of time without tiring.

The first difference is that boxing shoes offer much greater support for the ankles. Without this ankle support boxers can sometimes find themselves either suffering from ankle injuries, or being far less nimble in the ring. Boxing shoes are also much lighter than ordinary sports shoes, and this is important as any additional weight will slow down a boxer, and reduces his stamina over time.

Finally, a boxer's shoes incorporate a leather sole, which helps with moving quickly around the ring. Any advantage, however slight, will be magnified in the ring, and especially so over time.

It is therefore essential that boxing equipment is chosen carefully to ensure that the budget is spent wisely, and that no item is overlooked, and no sacrifice made wherever possible. Remember, taking shortcuts when choosing boxing equipment is likely to result in shortcomings in the ring!
