This condition begins when the fall season begins to change to winter and daylight hours are shortened. The majority of people experience symptoms sometime between September and November.
Furthermore, because of the severity and consequences of SAD and other types of depression, physicians require extensive evidence of the condition before they are willing to make a definite diagnosis. Even though signs may be very severe, physicians almost never diagnose a patient with SAD until after he or she shows symptoms for a minimum of three consecutive winters. People who experience this disorder begin to have feelings of depression, reduced motivation, and tend to sleep for long periods. They also develop a craving for carbohydrates or candy. This condition can seriously decrease an individual's ability to function at work or educationally. This lack of motivation can make it difficult for a person even to get out of bed and tend to normal activities. People with SAD find it difficult to participate in social situations, or even at home. They often have episodes of intense panic and irritability. Sometimes, symptoms become severe and distressing enough that some sufferers even think about suicide and require hospitalization for treatment. Not surprisingly, females appear to experience SAD more frequently than men do. Furthermore, this disorder seems to get better each year when spring arrives. In fact, by March or April, symptoms typically subside or resolve altogether - until the following autumn. This is true even in regions that tend to be cloudy or rainy throughout the entire year. In fact, as many as twenty percent of the people treated for seasonal depression will eventually exhibit signs of bipolar disorder. These people primarily tend to be depressed in the winter months, but have normal moods throughout the rest of the year. In some cases, however, individuals report experiencing instances of uncontrollable mood elevation, also known as mania. As with other types of depression, SAD may become very serious and even disabling if not treated properly. Additionally, some people suffer from very mild levels of SAD; they may struggle with sleepiness, decreased vigor, and eating difficulties. These individuals, however, do not usually suffer episodes of depressive moods or anxiety. This type of depression is relatively rare in sunny areas such as Tennessee, Arizona, and even Colorado. In contrast, people who live in states with a large number of cloudy days, such as Indiana, Michigan, or Washington are at higher risk for developing this condition. Residents of countries such as Denmark, Germany, and Ireland also struggle with seasonal depression. Scientists have used a number of different approaches to aid clients overcome this exhausting condition. They have tried exposing people to artificial light in an attempt to assist them to manufacture more serotonin and relieve depression symptoms. Researchers have also used medicines such as antidepressants, as well as supplements, such as melatonin, to help relieve these signs of depression. Often, people who experience Seasonal Affective Disorder also seek out counselors when their condition is at its worst. All of these treatments have been used with varying degrees of effectiveness. Despite this, all are much more costly and require more time than two recently introduced, innovative methods.
