Grace in favour, Jack for lads

Grace was in favour this year as the most popular girls' name in England and Wales, with US pop star Britney Spears also influencing new parents' choices, according to official data.

The Office for National Statistics said Grace was the number one choice for baby girls in 2007, up one place on last year, with Jack retaining the top spot for boys for the fifth year running.

Mohammed was also an increasingly popular choice, up five places to 17, while its variant Muhammad also gained ground, up six places to 38, both reflecting Britain's growing Muslim population.

But Jayden was the highest climber, up 36 places to 32. Britney Spears named her second son Jayden James after his birth in September last year.

Lewis and Sophie were most popular in Scotland; Jack and Katie in Northern Ireland; and Jack and Ruby in Wales.
