Combining Colors

Now we get to take our hues, tints and shades and start putting together combinations. The easiest color schemes to achieve are Monochromatic, Achromatic, Neutral, and Analogous.

When you use tints and shades of the same hue, your color scheme is said to be monochromatic (mono being one and chromatic being color). What do you think of this type of color scheme? I have always found monochromatic to be either too much, like a red or too plain, like a peach. The orange has enough variances in it for me. What are your thoughts?

Achromatic typically involves black, white & gray color schemes. Sometimes a bouquet of flowers will be used as a splash of color. Achromatic color schemes have never worked for me, they are too cool or sterile for me. I am a color person! What were your reactions to this picture? Do you disagree and does achromatic rub you the right way?

Neutrals are the safe color scheme. A small eclectic furniture store in my Midwest town says, 'œLife is too short for beige' and of course, being the color person, I totally agree! But I understand some of you may be drawn to this scheme the most, so I cannot completely dismiss it. What do you think of neutrals? Do you understand where I am coming from?

Analogous color schemes are usually made up with three different colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. They work very harmoniously together. It is said that these are the types of color schemes found in nature and that is why we are so comfortable with them. In my personal opinion, they can be very boring if the colors are too similar. So determine what will be the primary color in your design, choose the second color to support the primary and the third color to only be used as an accent. What do you think of this type of scheme?
