Weight Lifting Benches: The Basis Of A Home Gym

The same activity could be done on a floor mat, but it would be far less comfortable. The raised bench allows the individual to brace the feet and to lift the weights out and down rather than up. If using dumbbells, the equipment weight in the extended arms is added to the weight of arms for more effective muscle workouts.

The frames for weight benches are tremendously important. They must support the individual's body weight reclining or sitting on the bench as well as the weight of the equipment that is being used. This is not static weight but constantly shifting and moving weight load. It is not centered over only one part of the framework, but is usually positioned unevenly over one end of the frame, typically the head end.

The framework will be shaped differently, depending upon the major use of the bench. The usual footprint for the frame is a U-shape, I-shape, T-shape or in its basic form, a simple rectangle. The extra arms of the frame is where the most weight stresses are placed.

The frame must be sturdy enough that the shifting of weight above doesn't work a seam or weld loose. The frame must be rigid enough that it doesn't walk, work loose or shift positions even slightly while the exercise program is going on. A slight unexpected shift in the bench when a barbell is extended could lead to muscle strain or even more serious injuries.

The framework may be articulated so that it can be placed in an incline, decline or flat position. Narrower benches are more often used as dumbbell benches. The positioning of the bench platform will increase the effectiveness of your workout. Exercises done in a sitting position may exercise some muscle groups while a reclining position might be more effective for other groups. Choosing the right weight lifting benches will increase your opportunity for a great workout with a minimal expenditure for equipment.
